We had some family heirlooms to deliver to a cousin in Charters Towers, so we turned right at Townsville and headed west on the Flinders Highway. We haven't travelled on the Flinders Highway past Charters Towers before, so the plan was to head as far west as Julia Creek and then go south to Kynuna. Our first night was at Macrossan Park on the Burdekin River, but no one thought to take a photo. We did take a photo at our lunch stop the following day, though, at the Burra Range lookout.
From Hughenden we detoured north for about an hour for two nights at Porcupine Gorge. The day we arrived was nice and sunny, as was the day we left, but the afternoon in between when we walked to the bottom of the gorge was overcast. The formations in the gorge reminded us of Piccaninny Creek at The Bungle Bungles.

We stopped for lunch in Hughenden and had a short walk around the town. It was clear that we were in dinosaur territory. Fish, fossils and windmills also featured in the artwork.
We had a couple of nights in Richmond and made use of being connected to power and water to do some washing and make some more meals for the freezer. The caravan park is right on the lake which meant it was easy to go for a nice walk.

The morning we left we went for a walk around the town and saw some of their local dinosaurs.
Our last stop on the Flinders Highway was Julia Creek. We arrived early and nabbed a waterfront spot.
